No size chart can make every listing predictable. Your best starting point is a well-fitting item you already own. Compare its item measurements with the current listing, then check whether the seller measures at the same points. Body measurements and flat garment measurements are not interchangeable.

1. Make a reference sheet

Lay a garment flat without stretching it. Write down the measurement points, units and the fit you like (close, regular or roomy). For footwear, use a removable insole or a reliable internal-length measurement if available; foot length alone does not describe toe-box width. Do not compare a circumference with a flat width.

2. Tops and outerwear: compare a wearable silhouette

For a jacket, note the flat chest width (pit to pit), shoulder seam to seam, sleeve from shoulder seam and back length from collar seam. Ask whether the current size chart uses the same points. For a winter layer, measure the jacket you actually wear over a sweater; a fitted shirt is the wrong baseline.

Illustrative calculation — not this product’s measurements

Your own jacket is 60 cm flat across the chest; a seller chart says 58 cm at the same points. The listed jacket is 2 cm narrower laid flat (about 4 cm less around the chest). Whether that matters depends on the fit and layers you want. If the seller measured differently, the comparison is invalid until clarified.

3. Bottoms: waist alone is not enough

Write down flat waist, front rise, thigh width just below the crotch, inseam and leg opening. Compare a pair with the intended cut: wide denim against wide denim, not against slim trousers. If a waistband stretches, ask for both relaxed and gently stretched measurements rather than treating one number as the whole fit.

4. Shoes and boots: use internal length, then shape

Ask for a centimetre measurement of the removable insole or internal footbed and clarify which it is. Compare with a comfortable pair in a similar shape. A wider toe box, thick sock or winter lining changes the feel even when internal length matches. Avoid a universal EU-to-US conversion as the only decision rule.

5. Record uncertainty before choosing

Make a small note for each candidate: reference item, measurement points, current seller measurement, intended layers or sock thickness, and any unanswered question. If the seller only supplies a letter size, ask for a chart or measured photos. If they cannot provide them, that uncertainty belongs in the buying decision.

Questions worth asking

Should I size up automatically for winter?

No. Compare with a winter layer you already wear comfortably, and allow room deliberately for the specific sweater or socks you plan to use.

Can I compare a body chest measurement to flat pit-to-pit?

Not directly. First confirm which number the chart reports and how it was measured; otherwise you may be comparing different quantities.

Keep the evidence separate.
